If you prefer staying connected and reachable throughout your trip in Namibia, but want to avoid expensive international roaming charges, we recommend you use a Namibian sim card. Unfortunately none of Namibia’s mobile service providers currently offer an eSIM solution for travellers coming in to Namibia, so you will have to get a real one once you arrive here.

Which mobile provider to choose
Namibia’s main mobile network provider is called MTC. We recommend using an MTC sim card in order to have best network coverage.
How to get a Namibian sim card
1. Get your own sim card at the airport
A) Buy a sim card at the MTC stall in the luggage claim waiting area inside Hosea Kutako international airport.
Use the time while you wait for your luggage to purchase your own MTC sim card together with airtime and/or data there. Keep your passport at hand so that your sim card can be registered to your person.
B) If you do not have checked-in luggage, proceed out of the customs area into the arrival hall. Before exiting the airport building go to the MTC store on your right and purchase and register a sim card together with airtime and/or data there.
2. Borrow one of our sim cards
If you would like to have a sim card for the duration of your rent and want to skip possible cues at the airport, feel free to borrow one of our optional sim cards. We offer one sim card per rental car at no extra charge (just a cash deposit of N$200 / EUR10 / US$ 10 which you receive back once you return the sim and pin card). Limited sim cards available, so be sure to book one with your rental car in advance.
Where to buy airtime
If you have access to internet, buy airtime online here: https://www.mtc.com.na/online-payment/recharge
Alternatively MTC airtime vouchers can be purchased at fuel stations, supermarkets, kiosks, bars etc. across Namibia. Many bigger stores have a separate MTC vending machine (look for the blue and yellow machine, similar to an ATM) or ask for MTC airtime at the cashier teller.
How to recharge airtime
To recharge, SMS the airtime voucher number to 13200 from your Namibian number. Or dial *13200*rechargecode# from your Namibian sim card. If recharging was successful you will receive a confirmation SMS similar to this:

Data bundles
We strongly recommend you convert airtime into (data) bundles/buy (data) packages. Otherwise your airtime will be used up in no time. MTC offers various bundles, see details here https://mtc.com.na/prepaid/aweh:
Since most travelers primarily need data, we recommend packages such as AWEH YODATA 30.
Expiration: Please note that most packages are valid for 7 days only, but YODATA 30 is valid for 30 days.

To opt in for one of these packages: SMS from your Namibian MTC sim card to 13400 including text “awehyodata30” (or other text depending on the bundle you want)
International voice bundles

To purchase specific international voice bundles, download the MyMTC app from your App Store and purchase the required international voice bundles directly through the app.
Airtime balance enquiry
Dial *682# on your phone and follow the prompts. Reply “1” for balance enquiry > “1” for Airtime Balance or “5” for Aweh bundle balance.
